PASSION FOR SEEING – VIEW DEDICATED TO VERMEER

SYNSLYST – UDSIGT TIL VERMEER – 2023

Acrylics on canvas on relief structures of wood (97x345x0,5 cm)

It was a wonderful task to “portray” the view of Sankt Jørgens Sø seen from Vester Søgade 22 in Copenhagen! The main inspiration came from Vermeer van Delft’s painting of Delft (ca. 1659-1661) and it was part of the overall project to revive this in the Mauritzhaus Museum in The Hague. The idea of creating a four-part work (quadriptych) came from the classical musical world, e.g. in the symphonic movement division. But I also remembered Andy Warhol and his concept from the movie “Empire” (1965); where the Empire State Building is observed over the course of 8 hours (the length of the film!), in which only the light changes.

The final work became 4 relief structures, whose basic lines form a unified whole, where each individual structure is divided into 6 individual “Pictures”; that is, a vision of the 24 hours of a day experienced very differently, but also simultaneously: morning, noon, sunset and night light.

My very best Season Greetings,

Lars
